What Goes Around...

Everyone knows the saying, "what goes around, comes around." Probably the most easily recognizable examples of this is found in the fashion industry where clothing of the past becomes fun and popular again, some 20 years down the road. The design industry experiences these ebbs and flows, as well. Particular for our industry in the style, lines, forms, and colors of the past. These things are making their way back into the mainstream of the design world. They transform spaces into the modern world while still keeping an eclectic feel.  

From our new Veranda magazine, we found this article. Checkout some of the "old" styles that are becoming new again.

Inspired by this wallpaper from the 1720's, Bruschwig & Fils created a new fabric called "Lhasa." To updated the pattern, they reversed the design and made it crisper. Clearer lines, figures and trees and bee seen, compared to the wallpaper. They also have made it available to consumers in blue, shown below, periwinkle, red, lime green and toffee.

By the mid-18th century, trade was flourishing between Europe and the Far East. Thus, Asian design began influencing European design. The Royal Pavilion in Brighton, pictured below, was the seaside escape of the Prince of Wales in 1820. Because of its design style, it became the ultimate expression of Chinoiserie.

Chinoiserie can be seen in these candle sconces we have available through SWI Vintage.

At the same time that Europe was being influenced by the Far East, France was going through the Rococo movement. The Claydon House, pictured below, was built between 1757 and 1771. It is cited as one of the finest examples of Rococo embellishment.

Our Dorothy Draper inspired lacquered mirror has the look and feel of the Rococo movement.

In 1754, at the Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort looked to Far East design when he commissioned this pagoda bed.

In 2005, designer Michael S. Smith proved that style can be as fresh as it was 300 years ago with this room he designed.

J.Crew Style

We have talked before about the debate in what style comes first, fashion or home.Typically home style comes first even though fashion is usually more publicized. Either way, they both have a huge influence on each other and hit consumers around the same time. Our new J.Crew style guide came in the mail last week and we were excited with what we saw! Check out some new project we have been working on and just how much they relate to J.Crew's new fashion items for fall and winter.

Little Bit of Inspiration

Today's inspiration comes from Jonathan Adler. Adler is potter, author and designer that has done many things in his career. One of the things we like most about Adler's work is his use of color and textures. He is also not afraid to mix various styles together to create a singular designed look. Checkout some his projects below.

Happy Friday readers! Sometimes it can be tricky to decide just what to hang on your wall in your home. It's usually a toss up between photographs, art, memoroblia or other forms of home decor. Rather than just focusing on one item to display, have you ever through of combining items on the wall? We do this all the time in clients homes, and in ours as well! Combining things like art and tableware, on a wall, creates diversity in a space and gives it a sense of uniqueness. Check out some of these spaces that do just that.

Little Bit of Inspiration

As we were browsing through our new Traditional Home magazine, we came across this beautiful photo. The photo merges traditional and modern, which is what we try to do in our work as well. We love the blue and green colors, along with the various textures of the room. This photo shows that adding a modern piece of furniture to a traditional design scheme can work in pretty amazing ways. Check it out!

Before and After

It's been a crazy week here at SWI, but never the less, we thought we'd share some before and after shots with you! These items sold over the weekend and as you can see, they each went through their own dramatic transformation.

This headboard is made of bamboo and we thought it would be super cool to do it in a bright, fun color. We can see it in many different type of bedrooms, but no matter where it goes it will definitely be an instant pop of color!

This bench was just a little out dated for our taste, so we decided to lacquer it and put on some new fabric. Adding the gold to the sides of the bench creating that uniqueness that we look to add to each of our pieces. The fabric has a subtle animal pattern to it, that we thought would add a bit of fun to the piece.
